While
the villages of Mèze and Bouzigues are situated on peninsulas
which continue in to the lagoon , Balaruc-le-vieux on the other
hand is found at the end of a creek it dominates. Typically of Languedocian
trademark, Balaruc-le-vieux keeps its circular plan imposed by the
remparts still in place. Its houses show a few beautiful architectural
pieces. In spite of its name, this village is less antique than
the neighbouring resort Balaruc-les-Bains. Founded since the neolithic
and developped by the Romans, Balaruc-les-Bains disappeared during
the great invasions to re-immerge of its ashes in the XVI century
when the curative powers of its thermal waters and of its muds were
discovered. The contemporary thermal baths of Balaruc are found
side by side to the Roman ruins and with the house Sévigné
where the son in law of the famous marquise used to come for healing.
In the
background of these two Balaruc, no vineyards but the Gardiole mountain, which
houses the abbey of Saint-Felix-de-Montceau.
