Situated
on the coast of Vermeille, Collioure, a small village with an undeniable
charm, attracts each summer numerous tourists. Appreciated for its
charm, Collioure became, at the beginning of the century the city
for Fauvisme. In 1905, Matisse arrives at the small Catalan port.
He is fascinated by the colors of the mountains, the sea and the
fishermen. He invites his friend André Derain to join him.
During a whole summer, the two painters, faced with a vivid contrast
of colors , painted without respecting strictly the rules governing
use of colors. This style gave birth to a new school of painting-
Fauvisme.
Bracque,
Duffy, Marquet and Picasso also came to Collioure. In paying hommage
to this period, the mayor of Collioure created what is named "Chemin
du Fauvisme" (Road to Fauvisme) : twenty paintings of Matisse
and Derain are displayed along roads in the village; at the exact
locations where the painters executed their works.
