Meze
is the oldest and main town of the "Bassin de Thau" It
was built at the time of the Phoenicians , it fell in the hands
of the Greeks and finally came under Roman rule.In the times gone
by, fishing was a flourishing industry. According to the the Latin
writer Plive, tamed Dolphins drove schools of fish in to fishing
nets, a method believed to be used still in certain African coasts.
Meze used to exploit salt pits and excelled in oyster farming until
barbaric invasions put an end to these activities.
Meze
suffered several misfortunes all along her history , nevertheless
she has always been able to maintain a remarkable dynamism: the
vineyards and the olive trees added to her productions. Trading
also developped, and during the 18th century the town owned the
most important distillery in the world. Not long ago the local cooperage
started to export her productions to other parts of the world and
today acquatic farming is going strong. Her port is filled with
pleasure boats and a "thalassothérapie" center
is being discussed.
