TRACES
OF HISTORY
The City Hall is situated on the ancient Roman Forum which
during the Middle-Ages was a fish and wheat market. The present
monument was constructed in the 18th century at the site of what
was the former "Maison Commune" in the 13th century.
Cathedral
St Nazaire : the Roman cathedral with a unique nave, desroyed
by fire in 1209 and reconstructed in 13,14 and 15th centuries. The
church tower whose base remains since the 12th centuty will be modified
several times until the 16th century.
La
Chapelle de Pénitents : is the old church of the monastery
of the Cordeliers. It has a gothic style door dating back to the
15th century and a large still life fresco.
Saint
Jacques Church : is an old abbatial of the monastery of the
Augustins. It is a very good example of medieval art. The Chevet
visible from the outside of the church, with its capital decorated
with wisigothic inspiration is quite remarkable.
Hotel
Fabrégat : houses some collections of paintings and sculptures
of the 15th century. .
Hotel
Fayet : is the annex to the the museum of Fine-Arts. It is an
old private mansion of the 17th century. It holds collections of
paintings of the 19th & 20th centuries, as well as some sculptings
of the artist Injalbert from Biterrois.
Saint
Jacques Museum : presents many archeological & ethnological
collections, as well as collections of natural history. It gives
a good representation of the so called "pays" biterrois
(Béziers)
