Ganges

A small charming city (7412 inhabitants), situated north of the department , at the border of the Gard and south of the Cévennes. It is marked by its geographical situation and its own history. A fortified village during the Middle Ages , accessed by its four gates which a few remnants exist as testimony. The castle was built during the Roman era with Gallo- Roman Oppidum stones.

Ganges was famous during the 18th century because it was an internationally known for its fabrication of silk stockings (a real luxury at this time). Rayon and nylon has however replaced natural silk . Today , the the old town with its beautiful 16th and 17th century houses , it's fountains and arched passages give witness to the rich past of this small capital of silk.
